The cozy community of Falcon, Colorado has positioned itself to serve the residential needs of the military families assigned to Schriever Air Force Base. Falcon, with a population of about 5,000, is located some 15 miles northeast of Colorado Springs—specifically, at the intersection of Highway 24 and Woodmen Road. Compared to Colorado Springs, which has a population in excess of 350,000, Falcon is more personal, more relaxed and more tailored to the military lifestyle. Schriever Air Force Base is home to the Air Force Space Command’s 50th Space Wing, a division tasked with managing communications satellites for the Air Force Space Command, among other things. When ground was broken for the base in 1983, the facility was called the Falcon Air Force Station. The name was later changed to Falcon Air Force Base and then, in 1998, to Schriever Air Force Base as a tribute to retired General Bernard Adolph Schriever. Not surprisingly, the community of Falcon has matured since the establishment of the base. Today’s Falcon is still undergoing development of new homes and neighborhoods, in response to the rising demand for quality living options in the area. Real estate options consist of ranch properties, homes with expansive amounts of acreage. Advantages of living in Falcon include proximity to the base as well as to Colorado Springs and the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport. Recreational opportunities are plentiful. El Paso County in general is a favorite spot for nature enthusiasts; hiking, skiing, fly-fishing, horseback riding, golfing and rock climbing are all readily available.
